Riding whips are a helpful tool for riders as long as they are used in a measured way. Using a whip during training can help get your horse's attention, but overuse can cause your horse to become numb to whip aids.
What are the different types of riding whips?
Each discipline has different types of whips and finding the right one is important for both horse and rider.
-
Dressage whips: The longest of the “short” whips, dressage riding whips are used in competition and training. The rider can maintain posture and alignment whilst reaching the horse comfortably.
-
Jumping bats: A lightweight, robust option for jump training that offers the rider superior balance and handling.
-
Schooling whips: Use in training to give accurate reinforcement, helping improve technique, confidence and communication with your horse.
-
Jockey crops: These whips have a thick, padded end designed to encourage speed during races.
