How should my show coat fit?
Your coat is the most important aspect of your show attire. It helps enhance your appearance in the saddle and gives you a polished look. If your show coat is ill-fitting, it will be noticeable and may even distract from your performance.
Remember the following to ensure the best fit for your show coat.
● The shoulder fit is the one element that cannot be altered, so this is the most important thing to get right. The seams should line up neatly with the edge of your shoulders. Too narrow, and your movement will be restricted. Too wide, and your jacket will look boxy rather than fitted. To test the fit, stretch your arms forward and see if it's comfortable.
● The sleeves should look tailored, and the cuffs of your coat should end at your wrist bone. If you wear a long-sleeve show shirt underneath, only ¼ - ½ inch of its cuff should be visible.
● The buttons should lay neatly against your chest without gaping or pulling.
● The length of your show coat is a personal preference and is guided by the dress code of your discipline.
If you can tick off all the above, you feel comfortable, can move freely and look smart, your show jacket is ready for the ring!
How to measure a show jacket?
To find the most accurate size for your show jacket, you will need to take a few measurements. For this, you will need a measuring tape you can wrap around you. Alternatively, use a length of string and measure this against a ruler or retractable tape measure.
Chest
Measure your chest by wrapping the tape under your arms and around the fullest part of your bust. Ensure the tape is snug, but don’t pull it too tightly.
Waist
Measure the narrowest point of your waist. To identify this, look in the mirror and bend from side to side. For most people, it will be just above your belly button.
Sleeve length
You might need a helping hand to measure your sleeve length. You need to measure from the back of your neck, across your shoulder then down your arm to your wrist.
