What is a snaffle bit?
A snaffle bit consists of a mouthpiece with rings on either side. It applies pressure to the horse's mouth when the reins are pulled. Snaffle bits tend to be single-jointed, though the design can vary. This bit type is often used to train younger horses and beginner riders as they are simple in construction and considered a good all-rounder. The snaffle bit applies pressure to the horse’s gums and bars (between the top and bottom teeth) to maintain control, assist turning and strengthen communication between horse and rider.
There is also the full cheek snaffle bit, which has additional narrow arms above and below the rings to prevent the mouthpiece from sliding in the horse’s mouth, assisting the turning aid further.
