What is the flash for on a bridle?
Adding a flash to a bridle is a good training technique for young horses. It helps prevent the bit from moving upwards in their mouth, which can prevent them from receiving directions. The flash noseband encourages the horse to hold the bit in their mouth and chew on it gently. This produces saliva and keeps the mouth lubricated, meaning the horse can keep their mouth shut, making the bit more comfortable for them. The lower position of the flash discourages the horse from evading the bit, increasing the control that the rider has over the horse.
It's suggested that the flash noseband was developed in the 19th century for King George III to help control his horse, named “Bold Flash”.
