How often should a hoof pick be used?

You should use a hoof pick on your horse at least once a day. Whether your horse is stabled or field-kept, picking once a day is crucial for maintaining good hygiene and monitoring any issues, such as cracks and splits. It also helps check for debris, such as stones or excessive mud, grass, or hay buildup.

Which direction should you use a hoof pick?

You should move a hoof pick from the heel of the hoof towards the toe. This helps remove dirt and debris from the sole without potentially damaging the sensitive area known as the “frog”. This is the triangular tissue section extending forward on the hoof, with a spongy texture. The grooves of the frog should be gently cleared, moving from the heel to toe, and the sole should be cleared in the same way. If you’re using hoof picks with brushes, use it to brush out loose debris after using the pick.
