How to plait a horse with threads

Horse plaiting thread creates neat, decorative plaits in a horse’s mane or tail, usually for show purposes. However, some riders plait their horse's mane to tidy their hair and prevent it from getting caught in the tack. Plaiting thread tends to be waxed, so it grips the hair, providing firmer and more secure plaits.

    1. First, prepare the mane with a wet brush to make it easier to work with.

    2. Section the mane into an odd number of sections; you can use horse plaiting bands to hold the ones you’re not using in place. Take three sections and plait them tightly, keeping the base loose to prevent it from pinching your horse’s neck and agitating it.

    3. Use a needle and some horse plaiting thread and thread through the bottom of the plait from underneath. Then, make a loop around the end of the plait to secure it in place. Pass the needle through the loop and pull tight. Repeat this step to make it even more secure.

    4. Cut the thread close to the plait to finish.
