Grackle Bridles

A variation of the flash noseband, grackle bridles apply even pressure over a larger area if the horse opens their mouth. The grackle bridle’s purpose is to prevent the horse from crossing their jaw as a type of evasion. Plus, it helps relieve pressure from the horse’s incisors and pre-molars and allows the horse to breathe more freely, which makes grackle bridles a popular choice for racehorses. Oakfield has an extensive selection of bridles to suit every horse and discipline. Discover more with training bridles and dressage bridles.

What is the point of a grackle bridle?

The grackle bridle is designed to reduce evasion by horses by preventing them from crossing their jaw. It achieves this by applying pressure at the centre of the nose, where the two straps cross, and providing more stability around the jaw. This type of bridle relieves pressure from the horse's teeth and allows them to breathe more freely. This is why grackle bridles are most commonly used for racehorses.

    Is a grackle bridle harsh?

A grackle bridle is not inherently harsh, but it can be uncomfortable for the horse if it’s not fitted properly or misused. A grackle bridle should be fitted so the central panel sits on the horse’s nose, avoiding sensitive areas and nerves. Cheek straps should sit on the lower cheekbones, and the bottom strap should rest in the chin groove. You should be able to slide fingers around the chin groove, and cheeks. At Oakfield, we have an extensive range of bridles to choose from. Browse our anatomical bridlesto discover more.
